As we get older, our face naturally starts to change. Every patient is different and so the rate at which this happens can vary, but one of the changes that you will probably first start to notice is the difference in the skin around your eyes. This skin is very thin and is easily affected by the aging process, during which reduced production of collagen and elastin causes skin to lose natural suppleness and elasticity. This enables lines and wrinkles to form and skin to sag. Fortunately, this is something that can be corrected using blepharoplasty surgery.
Blepharoplasty surgery is better known as eyelid surgery or eyelid reduction. Its purpose is to reshape the eyelids to improve their appearance, such as to reduce sagging and puffiness that can make you look tired or older than you really are. However, it can also improve your vision if your eyelids are causing any sort of visual impairment. Upper blepharoplasty focuses on the upper eyelids, while lower blepharoplasty targets the lower eyelids. Patients can have either or both procedures, although they may not necessarily be performed at the same time.
Blepharoplasty surgery can be performed using either local or general anesthetic, and patients can usually go home the same day. Where possible, all incisions and sutures will be placed into the natural creases of the eyelids so that any scarring is minimal, and your surgeon will give you specific advice to follow as to how you should care for your eyes while they heal. This will include information about what medications to take and when you should take them, reducing inflammation using compresses and keeping your eyes clean minimizing your risk of infection.

Before you can undergo blepharoplasty surgery, you’ll first need to attend a consultation appointment with your surgeon to determine if you are a suitable candidate for the procedure. This consultation will include a physical exam, a vision exam, and eyelid photography. Your surgeon will also want to speak to you about your motivations for the surgery and your expectations for the procedure and its outcome.
